Celebrate the Chinese New Year with Wine

Sunday 5th February, at 11:00pm

As Chinese New Year is being celebrated at the moment (新年快乐!), our team decides to involve some contents for this topic, just like the Christmas in the west, for the Chinese new year period all the Chinese families get together in order to see the family members and eat and drink and share the experiences in the past year and share also the best wishes for the coming year, 2017 is the year of rooster and rooster has its nickname phoenix in the Chinese culture, today we are going to introduce to all our readers some popular Chinese dishes in the new year's table and recommend wines that go with them. Here it goes.

Tang cu fish 糖醋鱼

In Chinese, "fish" (鱼 Yú ) sounds like 'surplus'. Chinese people always like to have a surplus at the end of the year, because they think if they have managed to save something at the end of the year, then they can make more in the next year. So this is a dish that appears in almost each table of the Chinese family, the sauce tastes both sour and sweet with tender fish meat melting in your mouth, and to bring the best flavors out of this dish, we would suggest that you choose something that is sweet and powerful in order to balance the strong flavor of this dish, our choice is the Chateau Rieussec from the sauternes region of bordeaux France. It is intense and concentrated with sweet, lush, honey coated tropical fruits, apricot and peach, complicated by vanilla and spice notes is primary, yet already delicious.

Spring rolls 春卷

Spring rolls (春卷 Chūnjuǎn ) get their name because they are traditionally eaten during the Spring Festival. It is a dish especially popular in East China: Jiangxi, Jiangsu, Shanghai, Fujian, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hong Kong, etc. Spring rolls are a Cantonese dim sum dish of cylindrical-shaped rolls filled with vegetables, meat, or something sweet. Fillings are wrapped in thin dough wrappers, then fried, when the spring rolls are given their golden-yellow color. We would recommend you the clonakilla from Australia which is a blend of shiraz and viognier, with its bright, crips fruit touch and a toasty overlay, it will certainly complement the spring rolls on your table.

Chinese dumplings 饺子

With a history of more than 1,800 years, dumplings (饺子 Jiǎozi ) are a classic Chinese food, and a traditional dish eaten on Chinese New Year's Eve, widely popular in China, especially in North China.

Chinese dumplings can be made to look like Chinese silver ingots (which are not bars, but boat-shaped, oval, and turned up at the two ends). Legend has it that the more dumplings you eat during the New Year celebrations, the more money you can make in the New Year. We chose the Gerwurztraminer from Dirler-cade for the Chinese dumplings which is a from the Alsace region of France. Full-bodied with flavors of apple and apricot, it has a hint of sweetness with a delicate spice finish. The wine is improved by bold flavors like that in ginger, which brings out the wine's inherent spiciness.

Sweet rice balls 汤圆

Sweet rice ball (汤圆 Tāngyuán ) is the main food for China's Lantern Festival, however, in south China, people eat them throughout the Spring Festival. The pronunciation and round shape of tangyuan are associated with reunion and being together. That's why they are favored by the Chinese during the New Year celebrations. We have been a little adventurous with this one because with all the festive ambience how can we miss out le champagne? The sparkling note and fruity palette with add even more happiness and flavor to the sweet tangyuan.

So, would you like to eat the Chinese dishes with our wine recommendations to enjoy the new year environment ? Wish you all a fortunate and prosperous 2017 !
